The “quilting across Canada” journey continues: Alberta! The inspiration photo is from my crafty friend Karen‘s road trip through the badlands earlier this summer. Batik fabrics were the perfect texture for hoodoos and prairie sky – they already look somewhat windswept and eroded, watercolour strokes reminiscent of geological striations.

These little pieces are joyful to sew. Experiments in tone and shade and shape, and trust that it’ll turn out. I have my doubts along the way and have ripped out a fair amount of stitching, but always the end result makes me laugh in amazement.
