Roof tiles in Yuyuan Garden, Shanghai.

Walled gardens and temples in China are astonishing – one moment you’re in a busy and intensely loud metropolis of millions; pass through the gates and into a walled area, and suddenly you’re in a peaceful oasis of quiet reflection. The city noise disappears almost entirely. Amazing.

None of my other photos from here capture the serenity and beauty of the gardens themselves, so you’ll just have to imagine the bridges and ponds and mosaic tiled paths and pavilions with winged rooftops; the dragons sculpted onto the tops of the walls, the immense and ornate doors, the woodwork of the window screens, the variance of carefully selected foliage of multiple hues. It is the garden of my dreams.
